Pada malam tadi, saya menemani seorang rakan internet yang telah menghubungi saya setelah berkali-kali menerima email mengenai Score A Programme. Beliau ialah Encik Fadli yang bekerja di Bandar Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur tetapi tinggal di Senawang, Negeri Sembilan. Beliau menyatakan bahawa baru terdetik hatinya untuk mengetahui Score A Programme secara lebih dekat lagi apabila anak beliau akan menduduki peperiksaan UPSR pada tahun hadapan. Beliau juga mempunyai seorang lagi anak yang juga belajar di sekolah rendah. Encik Fadli adalah seorang jurutera, profesion yang tidak asing bagi saya.

Saya sebenarnya sudah agak lama tidak menghadirkan diri ke sesi penerangan Score A Programme di Bandar Tasik Selatan, Kuala Lumpur. Pada malam ini, tujuan kehadiran saya adalah lebih untuk mendapatkan maklumat kemaskini mengenai Score A Programme. Namun, apa yang saya perolehi adalah lebih daripada itu. Penerangan malam tadi adalah lebih bermakna dengan sesi perkongsian oleh seorang guru mengenai Score A Programme. Sebenarnya, saya amat menghormati guru bukan kerana guru ini yang memberikan ilmu kepada kita di bangku sekolah tetapi arwah bapa saya juga adalah seorang bekas guru besar. Guru yang dimaksudkan ialah Cikgu Rokiah. Cikgu Rokiah sebenarnya bukan guru biasa kerana beliau ataupun setelah bersara, dikenali sebagai Puan Hajah Rokiah Alias adalah bekas Pengetua Sekolah Tun Khursiah. Sekolah Asrama Penuh perempuan utama di tanahair.

Saya telah membuat sedikit pencarian mengenai Cikgu Rokiah dan tidak syak lagi dan sahihlah beliau adalah orangnya setelah membaca berita yang pernah disiarkan oleh NST tidak lama dahulu.

Ok, no getting around it, you’ve got to learn some HTML! You don’t have to be great at it, but you really do need the basics. Even if you choose to write and format everything in Word and use PDFs for your ebooks, white papers, articles and the like. You will still need to be able to change headlines on your website, create or change ‘thank you’ and ‘sales’ pages, and add things quickly to your website.

There is a wonderful membership website that I once enjoyed. The site is filled with Internet Entrepreneurs who are successfully running an internet business. There are a series of detailed interviews discussing how each of them got to be successful. Without exception, every single business owner said ‘you have got to do your own website’. The number one regret by those who hired others was the money they spent on web designers. They all learned HTML in the end.

Now I am not saying that you will be stuck building your own websites forever and ever… in fact, I encourage everyone to have “propellerheads” on their team. Its just that even when others are building the sites for you, you will still want to be able to gain access and do some minor changing of copy, colors, font sizes and the like.

There are other languages that have been created after HTML. Java, php, and others. However, you will find that for most needs, a bit of HTML is all you need. Anything more complex is best handled by your propellerhead, unless you have plans to really master this area of web design.

At some point you will need an HTML editor. This is a handy tool that lets you see what it is you have created. Let’s take a quick look at the most popular ones.

Microsoft FrontPage® is very popular. It has a lot of great functionality allowing you to build a site from scratch. It’s a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor that lets you graphically design your web pages. It’s one of the easier ones to learn. Though you will still spend a week or two banging your head trying to figure it all out (assuming you are a beginner). One of the things I like about it is the ability to “split” the screen and see the HTML code along with what the web page looks like.

Dreamweaver is supposed to be the best. It’s the high end program that does everything but the dishes with regards to website design. The learning curve is high. And frankly, if you aren’t going to be building sites right along, it’s expensive.

There are website builders out there that take all the pain out of building websites. You provide the copy and the graphics, and they manage the rest. The one we like at the moment is XSitePro. It is relatively easy, quick and inexpensive as these things go. They also don’t appear to leave a “footprint”… something that the search engines look for to see if your sites are mass-produced.

That’s because Isaac Will, who had the whole splendid script in his head and who kept promising himself he was going to take time off to write it someday, died of a heart attack four days ago. Mr. I. Will’s funeral will take place at 3:30 today, in Somerset Cemetery.

Most people think of cemeteries as sad places. I do too, but for a different reason. When I drive by one, I don’t just see grass, trees, flowers, monuments, and mourners. I see unwritten books that were going to enthrall their readers and unfinished plays that would have enchanted their viewers. Never written goodbye letters. Never started paintings and sculptures. Never completed love songs that would have made your eyes mist over. It was Oliver Wendell Holmes who wrote, “Most people go to their graves with their songs still unsung.”

Many people are saddened by the daily news of disappearing species that will never come back. But equally sad is the fact that each and every day, around the world and around the clock, thousands of ideas, projects, products, inventions, and solutions disappear forever when they are buried with the people who died without ever realizing their dream. I agree with what Stephen Sondheim said on this; “A dream is just a dream, if it’s only in your head. If no one gets to see it, it’s just as good as dead.”

So I beg of you, if you have something inside you that you want to bring out into the world, start working on it now! Today. Action today, my friends. ACTION TODAY!

On Wednesday, December 3, 2003, I walked into Margarita Pizza to buy one of their award-winning traditional Italian pizzas (best in Montreal in 1999). I’ve been stopping there for the same reason every other week for the last 30-some years. But there was something different there that day. For the first time ever, Attilio, the owner, was not behind the counter.

A friendly woman informed me that she and her husband had just acquired the business a few days earlier. After owning the business for forty years, 76-year-old Attilio Janiello finally decided to sell it and enjoy the fruits of his labor. And from what I heard, the “fruit” was very large.

The deal was signed and money changed hands on the previous Friday at 4 PM. His friend told me that on the way home from the bank that afternoon, Attilio stopped at a travel agency to enquire about plane tickets for a trip to Italy he was planning to make in the coming months.

On Tuesday December 2nd, at about 8 AM, while having breakfast with his wife and reading his Corriere Italiano, Attilio died of a heart attack. He enjoyed the fruits of 40 years of labor for less than 100 hours … And yet, I’ve heard since that visit that he was willing and ready to sell …about 15 years earlier. He was ready, but he didn’t go… Perhaps he was waiting for the time to be just right…He waited too long.

What is YOUR biggest wish, YOUR lifelong dream … and what’s keeping you from going after it? RSS is technology – a simple software program – that allows you to access web and blog content automatically. The acronym’s most popular translation is “Really Simple Syndication. Once your browser or computer has an RSS reader on board, you can subscribe to any number of RSS “feeds.” A feed is simply a way in which a reader may subscribe to website content – most commonly blogs or news sites. A news site, for example, may list their latest headlines or entire articles in their feed every time a new article is published. A blog would publish this feed as a series of recent posts.

The whole RSS “movement” is a step towards utilizing the Internet more efficiently. The trick is to avoid overloading your email inbox with daily reports that you end up ignoring most of the time. For that purpose, there are sites like Feedster that will search millions of RSS feeds for articles that are relevant to your interests. Like any search tool, however, these services are hit and miss. They are still working off keywords and sometimes what they find is relevant, sometimes not. But if you want daily news broken into categories, it’s great technology once you learn how to make it work for you.
